Are you in a leadership position?
Do you lead by example? One of the things that I love about having a team and being a leader is that it continues to push ME at the same time. For me to expect things from my team, I must be leading by example and doing what I talk about. There is nothing worse than having a leader that tells you what you should be doing when you know full well they do not do the things they encourage you to do. So if you are in a leadership position, and you are encouraging your team to hit a certain goal, be sure you are hitting it as well! Assure them that you are all in this together.
You do not have to be the best of the best in every category. After being in a leadership position for several years I have noticed that when we show consistency and are doing what we encourage others to do, people will follow. It is important not to be so far out there that people think there is no way they can compete, or even begin to keep up.
In leadership, we want people to see that what we do can completely be replicated.
A great tip would be to encourage your team to beat you! Each month I do a “Beat the Executive Director” challenge. This is a great challenge because it keeps pushing me to do well, but also allows me the ability to praise all they have accomplished. If my numbers were so high that people could rarely ever beat me, it wouldn’t work. With effort, these numbers are completely doable.
So have some fun being a leader. After all, we all need to have fun doing what we do!
